If your dog is already vomiting because of the fruit, the vet may give an antiemetic to stop the vomiting to help your dog feel better. This acts to bind and neutralize the toxins of the grapefruit before the body absorbs it. If too much time has passed since ingestion, and your vet is unable to induce vomiting, they may give your dog activated charcoal. This can only be done if you discover that your dog has eaten grapefruit and get veterinary assistance promptly. This involves giving your dog a drug that makes it vomit, emptying your dog’s stomach of any remaining pieces of grapefruit before the body absorbs it. The treatment your dog receives will depend on the symptoms they are currently showing. You may also like our article on Dog Food for Kidney Disease. Your vet will also run a series of blood tests to determine how your dog’s organs are handling the toxin and possibly a urine test to evaluate your dog’s kidney function. If your dog is showing any skin-related symptoms, the vet will scrape off a thin layer of your dog’s skin for examination under a microscope to rule out any other causes. Dogs with grapefruit poisoning may become more sensitive to light which can cause skin reactions. Any diarrhea will be collected and tests will be run to rule out any other causes. The vet will perform a physical examination of your dog and will also take a close look at any vomit your dog brings up. It is important to give your vet as much information as possible to help them know how to advise you. For example, the flesh is very acidic but is not toxic like the rind. Different parts of the grapefruit are harmful to dogs in different ways. If you discover that your dog has eaten grapefruit, you should call your vet to arrange an urgent appointment. What Should You Do if Your Dog Eats Grapefruit? Grapefruit, or more specifically, Psoralen, can be fatal so if you suspect your dog has eaten grapefruit, you should take them to the vet immediately. As the toxicity progresses, they may become sensitive to light, start to drool excessively, and eventually, they may be unable to walk or stand. If your dog eats grapefruit, they are initially likely to show common gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. If the peel and seeds are removed from the grapefruit, it does reduce the level of toxicity to some extent, but it is not worth the risk. The peel, seeds, and pith are the most toxic parts as they contain the most Psoralen. The main risk to dogs from eating grapefruit comes from an ingredient called Psoralen, which is very toxic to dogs. Grapefruit flesh is very acidic, which can cause digestive issues for dogs and the rind contains essential oils which are toxic to dogs. There are no other known benefits of eating grapefruit for dogs. So, one of the main benefits of eating grapefruit for humans may actually cause harm to your dog as it may result in too much Vitamin C in your dog’s body. However, dogs, like most animals can produce their own Vitamin C. Grapefruit contains Vitamin C, which is great for humans as we are unable to produce our own. So, if dogs don’t generally like the taste of grapefruit, should we still try to give it to them? Does it have any health benefits? The short answer is No. Of course, this isn’t always the case as anyone whose dog has stolen chocolate from the Christmas tree knows! But is it healthy or even harmful to our canine friends? Do Dogs Like the Taste of Grapefruit?ĭogs generally don’t enjoy the bitter, acidic taste of grapefruit and this is usually a good indication that food is not good for dogs – the dog’s taste buds naturally steer them away from foods that may be harmful. We know that grapefruit is healthy for humans as one of our five a day.

Spencer Cox R made a really important point in a recent podcast interview with conservative commentator Matt Lewis. signifies a relatively large change of viscosity with changes of temperature. “The viscosity index (V.I.) of an oil is a number that indicates the effect of temperature changes on the viscosity of the oil. The Viscosity Index is very important in a suspension oil. A very, very rough conversion table from SAE gear and motor oil grades is HERE.Ĭonversion from SUS to ISO Courtesy of Shell. ASTM D88-94(1999).Ī rough conversion table from SUS grades is HERE. Although this is slightly better system than using SAE 'weights', the Saybolt Universal Second is considered antiquated, is vague and is not a valid viscosity reference. 85/150) or Saybolt Universal Second / Viscosity Index. Some oils are labeled on the SUS / VI (ie. SAE J300 is used to define engine oils, while SAE J306 is used to define drive line (gear) and chassis lubricants. Another point of confusion is that motor oils and gear oils are rated for viscosity on the SAE scale at different temperatures, leading to similar viscosity oils having very different ratings. The SAE weight system has a very broad and vague viscosity range and does not even cover the viscosity range that most quality motorcycle suspension systems require. Suspension oil is labeled by weight because consumers are used to thinking of oil (ie. Viscosity comparison chart Courtesy of Shell Oil. These problems can be seem graphically by comparing several systems to each other. This is not a judgment about the quality of these oils, just that the 'weight' label leads to a lot of trouble when trying to tune with suspension oils. For example Maxima RSF 7wt is actually lighter than Spectro 5wt and Silkolene Pro RSF 7.5wt is actually heavier than Showa SS-8 10wt. A straight line graph made from these two viscosity numbers at each temperature can give a very close approximation of the oils viscosity at any other usable temperature.ĭO NOT GO BY LABLED OIL WEIGHT! Not only is this a poor way to decide which oil to use, but each manufacturer seems to be on a different scale. Using these numbers, you can tune oil viscosity with a very high degree of precision in a specific heat range. ‘cSt’ stands for CentiStokes, an accurate dynamic measure of viscosity ( ISO 3104:1994 & ASTM D445-04). Modern fluid viscosity ratings are on an ISO VG (visocosity grade) using test standards set down by ASTM D-2422-97 (2002)& ISO 3448:1992 system of: / / VI. These forks tend to use oils in the ISO 16 range. This is a very important bit of information for the mechanic.ĪTF is far too thick to be used in a modern cartridge damper fork. This means that if you are in Florida or Mongolia, AFT is going to be available and consistant. Why? Of all the commonly available automotive fluids capable of being used in the system, ATF is manufactured within a very, very tight and suitable viscosity range, esentially ISO 34. Aside from other changes that effect damping, the viscosity of the oil and how the viscosity changes as the oil heats up will be large factors in the system.įor years, ATF has been the standard fluid for damper rod forks. In addition to providing a lubricating and cooling bath for the dampers and bushings of the fork and shock to function in, the suspension fluid is the medium that is used to provide damping in a modern system.Įssentially, the oil is forced through an orifice or past a spring loaded shim to creating a resistive force to the action of the shocks. 9 Comercial Brands and their properties. The song is sung by a woman with a pleasant voice at varying tempos and is designed as a type of auditory time line. The program originally had three parts: teacher's manual, history cards (an absolutely essential element of the curriculum) and a memory song on audio CD. They offer four different history time periods (each aimed at a different grade level and designed to take one school year) which take students from creation to the present. Instead of isolating Bible and Christian history from what was happening in the rest of the world, the folks at Veritas aim to incorporate it. As you look over the reading selections, don’t be surprised to note, “I read this book in college.” These are academically (and spiritually) challenging courses. The editors also mention two beneficial references - Western Civilization by Spielvogel and the History of Art for Young People (we have it listed as Short History of Art) by Janson & Janson. The text does not include the reading selections you will need to obtain them separately. It also includes a grading calculator - an Excel file where you insert a student’s grades. Additionally, lesson plans, teaching tips, and midterm and semester exams with answers are included. The Teacher CD-ROM includes the entire text on PDF files with answers and talking points inserted into the discussion session notes. Appendix II is a parallel timeline of events in history, literature, and theology, with miniature art representations or a book cover. Appendix I outlines a two semester reading schedule. In addition to the wonderful artwork, other excellent resources are evident. The really comforting thought is that the Teacher CD contains complete and thorough answers and talking points for every discussion or question raised. There are daily reading assignments and almost daily writing assignments plus a large selection of optional activities. Some days the discussion is general with an eye on comprehension but more often the focus is textual, cultural, and biblical analysis. Discussion is a major part of every book study. The number of weeks in a study varies with the selection. Beginning with an introductory worldview essay, a session is outlined for each day a book is to be studied. In essence, they’re comprised of stand-alone guides for reading, studying and understanding these Great Books and the Great Conversation of ideas they represent. These texts will instill confidence even as they make the job easier for you. If you’re beginning to feel overwhelmed, relax. Lastly, since the Bible includes the same topics as these books there is no subject that this curriculum will raise in the minds of junior or senior high students that would not also be raised as he reads the Bible. Thirdly, they see the Christian home as a boot camp where students are taught to handle their weapons - under godly, patient supervision. Secondly, they assume that godly oversight and protection will accompany the student through this coursework. First, they assume that evil is to be conquered rather than evaded.
